Mother’s Day and Father’s Day
People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day,on the second Sunday in May,and Father’s Day,on the third Sunday in June.
Mother’s Day was proclaimed a day for national observance by President Wood row Wilson in 1915.Ann Jarvis from Grafton,West Virginia, had started the idea to have a d ay to honor mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation.
In 1909,Mrs.Dodd from Spokane,Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She wanted to honor her own father,William Smart. After her mother died,he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910,the first Father’s Day was observed in Spokane.Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to establish Father’s Day as a national commemorative day,in 1972.
These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways.On Mother’s Day people wear carnations.A red one symbolizes a living mother.A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home,as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day.These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards an d gifts.Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”.Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
The history of Mothers Day
The earliest Mothers Day celebrations are traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.
During the 1600s, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday", celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent . "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. During this time many of the Englands poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.
As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" -- the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.
In the United States Mothers Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace.
In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mothers Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mothers church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mothers Day on the second anniversary of her mothers death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mothers Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mothers Day. It was successful, by 1911 Mothers Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow
Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mothers Day a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mothers Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May.
Richer Than Gold
-- Strickland Gillilan (1869-1954)
I had a mother who read me things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings --
Stories that stir with an upward touch,Oh, that each mother of boys were such!
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be --
I had a mother who read to me.
