If you smoke and you still don't believe that there's a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. No one will accuse you of hypocrisy. Let us just say that you are suffering from a bad case of wishful thinking. This needn't make you too uncomfortable because you are in good company. Whenever the subject of smoking and health is raised, the governments of most countries hear no evil, see no evil and smell no evil.
You don't have to look very far to find out why the official reactions to medical findings have been so lukewarm. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It's almost like a tax on our daily bread.
This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether.
For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct antismoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning--say, a picture of a death's head--should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.

“日月如梭,光陰似箭”,不知不覺中,我從一個(gè)說話咿咿呀呀的幼兒,長(zhǎng)成了一個(gè)講英文都很流暢的巧嘴小姑娘。
那天,我報(bào)名參加了“英語趣配音大賽”。
比賽在農(nóng)校演播大廳進(jìn)行,我早早來到了賽場(chǎng)熟悉環(huán)境,嘴里不停地練習(xí)著賽前的自我介紹。
比賽快開始了,小李老師剛跟我們說完了比賽規(guī)則,兩位主持人便閃亮登場(chǎng)了。他們用清脆流利的英語開場(chǎng)之后,比賽正式開始。
哎?怎么跟我一起學(xué)英語的兩位同學(xué)和我一樣都是A組?好在我是A6最后一個(gè)號(hào)”。好想聽聽B、C組的選手怎么讀,也好參謀參謀啊……我的心里不住地在打鼓。
第一位參賽同學(xué)上場(chǎng)了,她向大家自我介紹后,開始了趣配音,有點(diǎn)小緊張,畢竟是第一個(gè)選手啊,配音完畢后,我不由替她長(zhǎng)呼了一口氣。
第二位同學(xué)是我認(rèn)識(shí)的張煜謹(jǐn)同學(xué),她講的時(shí)候,我用心聽她有沒有讀錯(cuò)的和漏掉的內(nèi)容。
一會(huì)功夫就輪到了另外一位同學(xué)李源卿。我滿懷期待地聽著他的`配音“功夫熊貓”,感受他的語速、語調(diào)、情感的把握,自己好借鑒一下。
“下一位A5號(hào)選手請(qǐng)上場(chǎng),A6號(hào)準(zhǔn)備”主持人話音一落,我緊張的心情無以言表,心都快要跳出來了。在5號(hào)配音快結(jié)束時(shí),我又默默回憶了一下自己的內(nèi)容。
這時(shí),主持人宣布:“請(qǐng)A6號(hào)選手上場(chǎng)……”我便懷著緊張而又興奮的心情走向賽臺(tái)。面帶笑容向評(píng)委和觀眾做了自我介紹,然后開始了配音“我們一起捉迷藏”……配音播放完畢后,聽到臺(tái)下響起了熱烈的掌聲,我邁著輕松的步伐回到了自己的座位。
激烈的比賽進(jìn)行了將近兩個(gè)小時(shí)才結(jié)束。
主持人報(bào)了前三名的獲獎(jiǎng)名單,卻沒有我,我的心揪緊了。
直到老師報(bào)優(yōu)秀獎(jiǎng)時(shí),才點(diǎn)到我的名字,我的心里一陣失落,我忍住傷心對(duì)自己說:“不能灰心,只要繼續(xù)努力,就一定能取得好成績(jī)!
最后老師單獨(dú)和我說了一句話:“下次多加練習(xí),下次會(huì)成功的!”我聽小李老師這么一說,心里才舒服了一些……

Cross-cultural research shows that we can examine all cultures by using a basic taxonomy of cultural behaviors which allows us to see the differences and similarities among cultures.
This article provides students with knowledge and activities to enhance their awareness of cultural patterns among the different cultures of the world.
In the following lesson students will learn about basic attitudes different cultures have toward three cultural value dimensions: the role of the individual in a society, power distance, and time orientation. Students will then apply this knowledge in activities that require them to decide how to act in cross-cultural situations based on the information they have learned about that cultures values.
