阿聯(lián)酋總統(tǒng)扎耶德因病逝世后，其長子哈里發(fā)順理成章的繼任父親之位，成為阿聯(lián)酋新總統(tǒng)。外電報道如下：Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan's eldest son has succeeded him as president of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Khalifa was chosen by leading officials from the seven emirates shortly after his father's funeral.

Emirate表示“酋長國；阿拉伯酋長（貴族、王公）之職位或階級”。阿拉伯聯(lián)合酋長國是由7個酋長國（阿布扎比、迪拜、沙迦、阿治曼、哈伊馬角、烏姆蓋萬和富查伊拉）組成的松散的聯(lián)邦國家，各酋長國經(jīng)濟基本獨立，各自執(zhí)行自己的經(jīng)濟發(fā)展計劃，有自己的海關(guān)系統(tǒng)，工商會和民航管理當(dāng)局等。
